Software Conception and Design
"Would you let a PC control your car?"

Thomas Köppel
Electronics Engineer
responsible for the electronics and pneumatics conception, designed and wrote the software

Though PC’s are indispensable tools for my daily design work, I would never let my car be controlled by one of them. But what proves to be good for high speed cars and ABS systems also qualifies for the high standards of safety and reliabilty applied to the OS3. That’s why I did chose the CAN bus system and controllers rather than PC type hardware for the digital brain and nerve system of the OS3. Exactly as on the luxury cars people dream of.

A second decision was to apply the highest degree of integration possible, thereby drastically reducing the possibilities of component failures as well as size and weight.

What we have achieved with this conception of high integrated distributed intelligence is remarkable: reliability, speed, expandability to other peripherals like the MicroLaser, excellent upgradeability, ease of servicing, just to name a few.

The same kind of thinking is applied to software design and architecture. The modular conception allows individual validation of SW submodules and enables SW extensions which will become available during the life cycle of the OS3. Upgrades are particularly easy to install: just insert the latest OS3 smart media card and withdraw it after switching on. It’s so easy to keep up with future developements!
