Fluidics System
"We decided to make venturi and peristaltic available on the OS3, switchable at any time during surgery..."

Andreas Dietrich
Medical Engineer
designed the I/A system

After many years of experience in designing I/A systems I know that no other system allows such subtle flow control like a state of the art peristaltic pump does. On the other hand, the simplicity of a venturi system is convincing and nothing matches its responsiveness and instant vacuum power. Since both, flow and vacuum control, have their merits for different surgical manoeuvres and techniques, we decided to make the two systems available in their genuine form on the OS3, switchable at any time during surgery. Quite a difficult task! Especially because I also wanted to combine this with direct non contaminating sensing of vacuum in the peristaltic mode.

It took me months to design and optimalize the key elements for this: a twin pump and a venturi/ peristaltic hybrid cassette with a novel integrated sensor element. I always kept the operating staff and the surgeons in my mind who shall enjoy simplicity of handling and who shall benefit from perfect AC stability and responsiveness. Too bad, few people only will be able to imagine how much creativity and efforts were put into this unique design. But what looks simple at the end, is always the result of a long process of refinement.
